20 September 1876 — Paris
Wednesday. 20th September [1876]. I woke with a headache so I had to stay in bed till 12– Henry went to the Embassy– I & Hill went out to DuCroquets to see abt ordering my new gowns– I returned to lunch & Henry brought in Lord Odo Russell to see me– After lunch Henry took me again to DuCroquet to decide on the dresses & then we went to call on the Latraix who were out of town to try & find the Russells. In the street we met Ct Hatzfeldt & Sr Llorente & saw the Bedmars– We went at 5.30 to call on the Ettlings & found them in & had tea. Bss Weisweiller & Tifie &c came in with Tifie’s fiancé Mr Borges. We dined at the hotel & went to the Opera to hear the Huguenots in wh la Krauss sang. It was the 1st time we had seen the inside of the Opera– The staircase is grand as is the “foyer”—so much so that the house appeared small in comparison. The boxes are small & uncomfortable—2 people being closely packed on 3 rows. Weisweiller & Barrington both came to us. We did not stay late. The house is entirely gilt with rather a dark & heavy coloured gold– The ceiling is supported by heavy sprawling nude female figures—& fat children–
