27 September 1876 — Biarritz
Wednesday. 27th [September 1876]. Woke at Avila at 6 AM & made tea. We got to Madrid an hour late at 10. Had breakfast & rested– Sir John Walsham came & also A. Weil. Later Lady Walsham came & stayed some time telling me all about the death of her baby at La Granja & how it had to be embalmed in order to have it buried & all the difficulties in getting this done– There was also a messenger to be sent off the day the child died & poor Sir John was writing while the child was dying with tears running down his cheeks. We went early to bed—very tired.
