1 October 1876 — Madrid
Sunday. 1st October [1876]. Mr Dawson arrived last night. He has been appointed Chaplain to this Legation. Col. Fitch came with him here this morning. He had a service but few people came as it was not known generally that he had arrived. He preached fairly—rather a short sermon– The Walshams sat with us & after service Lady Walsham came upstairs for a little while. We lunched at 1. Wrote & read– At 4 I went out & fetched Henry at Hatzfeldt & then we went & picked up Miss Thompson at the Fonda de Paris & took her for a drive. We went to the Casa de Campo wh was horridly burnt up & there was not a blade of grass to be seen– We then drove round the outside of the town & in by the Atocha Ronda & drove up to the church to show Miss T. the fair wh was going on. Set her down at her hotel & came home before 6. Was low & wretched & glad to go to bed early.
