3 October 1876 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 3rd [October 1876]. Hill rather better but still keeps her bed. Very hot weather– Wrote & practised. Visit from Mr Jameson in the morning. Henry & I gave him a large Bible bound in red as thanks for his kindness in doing our service on Sundays for us. He explained that some English wished him to continue his service on Sunday & did not wish to come to Mr Dawson’s. I told him Mr D was chaplain to the Legation & it did not matter who came or not to our service. He said he did not wish to think of any opposition. Later visits from old Aylton & the Belgian Minister Greindl. They took tea with us & then Henry & I took a drive– Most oppressive weather. We could not canter. Went to the Retiro wh was empty & home by the Fair & the Prado. In eveng we went to Prices circus & took the 2 Aylton girls. There was a very clever clown called Billy Haydon who made us laugh. He had a very comic face altho’ he was not painted only whitened– He was slow & deliberate in manner. There were 2 little girls of 6 & 7 who did a double trapeze but very trying to look at. | |
