4 October 1876 — Madrid
Wednesday. 4th October [1876]. Woke with a headache & had to remain in bed till 4 when I got on the sofa. Lady Walsham came to see me & brought the boys. Sent them to tea with Mrs Beale & Lady W. had tea in my room. Dressed & went for a little drive quite late. It was very hot & sultry. Sr Valera called. We left cards on the Dss de la Torre—& Valera told us it was the Duke’s fête S. Francisco. It appears that the Dss has been back from Paris already 2 or 3 days wh we did not know. We passed her in the street & exchanged formal bows.
