6 October 1876 — Madrid
Friday. 6th [October 1876]. Fontaine found Hill a little better. He begged us not to go out late without being well clad. He said he saw us driving late & warned Henry to be careful. At ¼ 2 we went to the Palace to see the King– He was very amiable—seemed grown & more manly. He spoke about the movement against the Protestants, by making them take down their advertisements & sign boards. He said he was sorry as he was liberal—but we must do according to the country one lived in & this country required it of them. He seemed preoccupé & worried but kept us some time. They say there have been very disagreeable scenes between him & Q Isabella who is at the Escurial & will insist upon keeping up a scandal with a Sr Puente. We went afterwards to the Pss who was also in rather low spirits. We had a thunderstorm & some heavy showers of rain & it threatened all day. The change is hailed with delight as the heat & want of rain is very bad for everything. Went out driving at 5. Called on Mme la Romana & found her at home—& found there the Marqueses de Casa Irugo her daughter & son in law who returned yesterday from their honeymoon. Went afterwards to Mme Comyn. Found her in & sat with her some time. At 9 we went to the Prices Circus & took Mrs Hunt & her boy. Home at 11.20.
