10 October 1876 — Madrid
Tuesday. 10th [October 1876]. Painted all morng. Hot oppressive day. The Walshams came on their way to the station to take leave & have tea. At 4 we drove out to Caravanchel to see Css Montijo– Found her just coming out of her house to walk in the garden– So we walked with her & her niece Css Nava del Tajo & were joined by a French gentleman whose name I did not catch who has come to see after some property of the Empress Eugenie’s & who had been Bagaine’s ADC & had been imprisoned with him. We got home abt 6. I put up some flowers the Css gave me. Mr Kennedy came & dined with us– Hill worse with high fever.
