11 October 1876 — Madrid | |
Wednesday. 11th [October 1876]. ] Hill rather better. Dean of Westminster arrived from Cordova at 6 AM we sent to meet him– He came down for breakfast—looking very well & jolly. He said he had recd no letter inviting his friend. But when he called at 1 o’cl we begged him to move from the hotel here. Mr Dawson called & took the Dean & Mr Williamson to the Armoury– Afternoon Monteverde called & Mr Young (Bilbao Consul). Had tea & at 4.30 we went out driving, Henry & I, the Dean & Mr Williamson. We drove to the Bull ring & went over it. It is a very fine building & very well arranged & holds 17,500 people. We came back to the Retiro & down to the fair to see the fashionable people driving & got home abt 6. Mr Dawson & Mr Rogers (who had brought us letters) dined with us. He is a London clergyman & very amusing & odd. We had a very pleasant eveng. | |
