12 October 1876 — Madrid
Thursday. 12th [October 1876]. Not well & got up late. The Dean was taken ill in the middle of breakfast & had to retire to his room. At 2 Henry took him to the Palace to see the King & they afterwards went to the Gallery & sent back the carriage for me. When I was to fetch them I found the Dean felt sick & ill again so we brought him home as quickly as possible & then went & left some cards. Castelar, Valera & Malet & Mr Dawson dined. D. Miguel de los Santos Alvarez came in the eveng. Ruiz Gomez called on the Dean just as he was going to the Palace. Castelar was very amusing & talkative as usual—he said that things were looking well for the Republic & that the Dynasty could not last. They talked about the religious intolerance of the present Govt—of the absurdity of its late actions in insisting on having the words “evangelical” painted out of the boards on the chapels which is interpreted as manifestation. The Dean revived in the course of the eveng made great friends with the Spaniards & seemed to enjoy himself.
