14 October 1876 — Madrid
Saturday. 14th October [1876]. Worked at securing arms on colg: Visit from Clarita & also from Genl Serrano. He had a great explanation with Henry about what happened when the P. of Wales was here—said he was not answerable for his wife—but for himself he was devoted to us & that it all arose from an Alfonsist intrigue who told the Dss we had said all kinds of things against them—wh she believed—& he shed tears. Henry took the Dean & Mr Williamson to the Gallery & at 4 I went to fetch them. We drove to the church of the Atocha to see the church & the monument of Prim which was made by Zuluaga in metal inlaid with gold & silver. The recumbent figure of Prim is well managed altho’ not much like him & the canopy over him is too heavy & low. We then drove in the Prado till the King & Pss drove by in state as usual on Saty afternoons to go to hear the Salve at the Atocha. Came home & had tea. Had to dinner Ruiz Gomez—Llorente, A. Weil, D. Miguel.
