21 October 1876 — Madrid
Saturday. 21st [October 1876]. Got my plants all brought in & put in their places– Adee came early to see Henry also Mr Hamilton– Later Koudriaffsky called. He returned here yesterday. Mr Dawson also called. Mr Underdown left for England & I sent a Mexican cap by him to Susan Hambro. Went out early & called on Mme Calderon dela Barca at the Palace & found her in. I had a tremendous journey to get to her up a dark narrow little stair case a tremendous height. She talked abt the Montpensiers who are here now—said the King does not want to marry Doña Mercedes the Duke’s daughter. She lamented that the Queen had not come to stay here—& said the Pss had entreated her on her knees & in tears to do so but she wd not. I went on to Mme Koudriaffsky whom I also found at home. Returned to tea. Greindl called & Louise Aylton.
