15 November 1876 — Madrid
Wednesday. 15th [November 1876]. There was a grand requiem given in S. Isidro for the Ex Queen Maria Victoria presided over by Figuerola & others. Heard that it was a great success & it was crowded. Tamberlick sang at it. It was intended as a kind of demonstration against the present King & Govt. They can not help profaning such solemnities by politics. Drove out in afternoon took Henry to call on Greppi. We to see Mme Montebello who was in. There met a Mr Marval. He talked of chances of war—said the Russians were determined to have it—then England would take Egypt, Russia Constantinople & the Germans wd march to Paris!!! Hatzfeldt came in at tea time & Sr Ojeda came & examined my paintings. We dined at the Bauers en famille. Ojeda, Nicolas, de los Santos Alvarez, Pirel dined there.
