16 November 1876 — Madrid
Thursday. 16th [November 1876]. Wrote letters in morning. Went out driving at 2.30 walked in Fuente & left names on Ct & Css de Paris at the Hotel de Paris where they are staying. Home early. Visit from Ct Salm who can manage to drag along by the help of a stick but who has not recovered the use of his left side. It is sad to see a great big man not 40 such a cripple. At tea time came Mme Calderon de la Barco & brought her sister Marquesa de Llorente & her son to call & her great niece Miss Magallon. The Llorente boy is a phenomenon being only 14 & yet being enormously fat & not very tall– He looks like a man of 40! The Marquis of Llorente had been a diplomat & was last at Munich & when the post was suppressed he returned here & has not had another. Practised & worked & played backgammon.
