25 November 1876 — Madrid
Saturday. 25th [November 1876]. Painted all morning. At 3 Ida fetched me & Mrs Bruce & took us to the Cortes Mr B & Henry following in our carriage. Albareda made a long & good speech on religious tolerance & attacked the Govt for having approved the conduct of the Sub-Govt of Mahon in stopping the Protestant service. He declared that when the affair had been enquired into the Protestants were not allowed to give evidence & that one of the people whose evidence had been taken against them had written to the newspapers to say he never gave it & had been away at the time. His name was D. Edwardo Colorado & Albareda made every one laugh by making puns on his name– He also had despatches from the Eng: blue book from Henry & Lord Derby to prove that one of the conditions of recognition of Alfonso XII was religious toleration. He made an amusing & sensible speech & made a great impression. Canovas’ answer to him was weak & he evaded the question but said that all he had promised abt religious toleration was in a simple unofficial conversation with an old friend! Ulloa began to speak but as we could not hear him well & it was very hot we left the Cortès. Greppi & Hatzfeldt dined with us–
