19 December 1876 — Madrid
Tuesday. 19th December [1876]. Hill sulked all the time she was dressing me—as I was leaving my room I told her to empty out a cupboard in the bath room & I would keep the cloth for the liveries & the old silks in it. She said she cd not do it– I said she must. She was very rude—but I took no notice. I was sitting in the boudoir when she bounced in & said she found she cd not empty the cupboard & I might see that for myself. I went & ordered a chest of drawers to be brought down & began to look where else I could put the things. I went to the work room—& found Annie there having come to spend the day with Hill. I asked Hill what was in the 2 chests of drawers in that room—she said work materials. I asked her for the key—she got it out & laid it down—I told her to open the drawer– She looked me full in the face & said “No mum I wont open it” & bounced out. I went out & emptied the cupboard– Had to dress as I would not call Hill & fetched my own dress– At 2.30 Ida fetched me & we went to the Cortès together. The Minister of Grace & Justice was speaking when we arrived. After him D. Venancio Gonzalez answered him—Marquis de Sardoal—said a few words on the duel impending between him & the Minister of Justice & said they wd not trouble the Cortès but settle it outside the Cortès. Sardoal has called him out for something the Min. said of him in the Cortès a day or two ago. Then up got Sr Sagasta & attacked the govt abt the electoral decrees & then came some excitement—the President Posada Herrera rang his bell—to no avail– Primo de Rivera jumped up & shook his fists & screamed out something—the President broke his bell—other men kept popping up & screaming—the President addressed the house & said he would have silence—& he broke a couple of bells by the way he banged them on the table. Canovas made a stupid speech making fun of all the others & made the majority laugh– We stayed till 6 when Martin Herrera got up to speak & the excitement was over. We were very tired with the heat & were glad to go home– I arranged my silk cupboard before dinner. Did not ring for Hill at night.
