4 January 1878 — Constantinople
Friday. 4th [January 1878]. Had a confab with Messrs Kennedy & Sandison abt a dinner party for Monday next. Mr Masters arrived from Sofia with alarming news of advance of the Russians. Mme & Miss Parnis called. I went out with Mrs de Winton to the Khan & coming home called on Mme Dolez who was in. On my return I found Jerry in disgrace & intended sending him to bed as he cd not get the key of his room I shut him in the work room & went down, to receive visitors viz—Lady Thomas, Mrs & Miss Scudamore, B. & Bss Hirsch—Dr Temple Bey—&c &c. When I went up I found Jerry had been let out by Arthur as he had opened the window & howled so that a crowd began to collect & the porter came in to ask what was the matter– I sent him up to bed. Messrs Smijth, Kennedy & Leveson Gower dined with us.
