4 April 1878 — Constantinople
Thursday. 4th [April 1878]. At 11 oclock after hearing Jerry’s lessons I & Henry started for the Dolmabaghcheh mosque where we found Mr Stanhope with the Helicon boat & we met Mr Smijth & the Genl & took them with us & went on board the Helicon. We went up the Bosphorus & Henry landed at Prince Hassan to pay him a visit but did not find him in & returned on board– We meant to go on & be landed at Therapia & some of the officers up from the Fleet were to go on to the Black Sea. It was discovered that something had gone wrong with the engines & we could not move. We had to make fast to the buoy generally used by P. Hassan’s frigate near wh we luckily were. Soon after P. Hassan returned from a visit to his camp over at Beikos & came on board & offered to send for his steam launch. We accepted & went down to lunch with the Capt. & as soon as the steam launch arrived we went on to Therapia. Giovanni met us & I went over the house with him to make arrangements for the summer. We got back to the Helicon abt ¼ to 5 & finding she was not yet ready to move went on to town in the steam launch & got home abt 5.30. Adl Hornby came to stay with us & rode my horse to St Stefano. We had Captains Culine Seymour (Temeraire) Fitzroy (Alexandra) Stopford (Helicon) Musgrave (Cockatrice) & Hall (Flamingo) to dinner. Played billiards in the evening. Mr Bartlett is ill.
