25 May 1878 — Therapia | |
Saturday. 25th [May 1878]. We lunched at 1 in the breakfast room but Henry was waiting in his uniform for the messenger from the Sultan who were to come to congratulate on the Queen’s birthday. As they did not come at 2 he was obliged to dress & go off to Yildiz Kiosk in the carriage as he had something very important to say to the Sultan. Mr Ashburnham & Lord G. Montague recd the deputation when they turned up wh was abt 3.30—their mouche having broken down & so obliged them to go back & get into carriages. They brought their uniforms with them & put them on at the front door. We played tennis & had tea in the grove. Henry returned abt 6. All the morng I worked at pasting in scraps into the book. There was the usual Queen’s dinner at 7.30 of 30 people. I dined alone. In the evening there was a party & dancing. All over at 12. Mr Gribble slept here. | |
