16 June 1878 — Therapia | |
Sunday. 16th [June 1878]. Had service in the Orangery. I played the organ & was supported by Messrs Chermside & Cartwright for the singing. We had a large congregation it was very hot. After lunch we sat in the grove (Hy & I) & had tea there. P. Labanoff called– At 5 we went out in the large caique taking Mme Dolez, Mme Fournier, the Genl & Mr Mallet & went up to the mouth of the Black Sea. It was very nice & calm. All the way there & back there was a continuous uninterrupted flight of “departed souls” for abt 1½ hour going towards the Black Sea. We got home just abt 7.30 in time to dress for dinner. Capt. Wingfield & Capt. McCalmont & Mr Horace Guarracino dined. (The latter slept here) besides the Embassy. Sat in the corridor & the garden after dinner. It was very hot—here was a moon & lots of fireflies & a good deal of summer lightening. | |
