26 June 1878 — Therapia | |
Wednesday. 26th [June 1878]. In the morning I wrote for the post & messenger. At 1 oclock we went on board Antelope with the Admiral, Mr Baring & Kennedy to town; drove to the Embassy to see the things Mr Rassam had brought from Nineveh. They were opened & many things were found to be smashed. Henry went off to poor Mme d’Ehrenhoff’s funeral. I went out with the Admiral to call on Pss Reuss whom we did find in & then to do some shopping. Met Henry coming away from the funeral and was sorry to find the ladies had gone to it & I ought to have done the same. On returning to the Embassy we went into the garden & sat there. Mr Marinitch came to see Henry on business & then Mr Gribble. Hill brought us some tea to the garden. Dressed & went off to dine with Ct Zichy a dinner given to the Reuss who leave on Friday for their new post at Vienna. We assembled before dinner in the garden. Genl Todleben & Prince Iterinsky were also there. I sat between Zichy & Reuss. Zichy made a speech to “toaster” the Reuss who answered shortly. After dinner we sat in the garden & I had a long talk to the Spanish Minister Conte abt Madrid. Heard from him that the young Queen of Spain who was said yesterday to be dying from effects of a miscarriage is better. We returned home in the Antelope reaching it abt ¼ to 12. | |
