16 July 1878 — Therapia | |
Tuesday. 16th July [1878]. The M & S. went off with the Genl to town in the Antelope to see the dancing dervishes &c. I painted Jerry’s portrait all the morng. M. d’Ehrenhoff called to say his daughters shd come & stay with us next Saturday. Henry & I had lunch alone for the first time for an age. Sat in his room & read after lunch. Fournier called. At 3.30 Henry & I drove into town in the Victoria to meet the M & S. Went straight to the Embassy—had tea in the garden—showed the M & S. the house & then dressed & went to dine at Zichy’s: going down the hill to the French Embassy one of the horses fell & we had to get out & walk there. We dined in Zichy’s garden with chinese lanterns hung on the trees. It was a lovely eveng. There were only 3 Austrian secretaries at dinner besides ourselves. We sat in the garden till nearly ten when we set off home. Zichy sent our carriage on down the hill & made us walk down. We found the Antelope boat at Top-Khaneh & came up the Bosphorus in the Antelope having a most lovely moonlight journey perfect with out wind & we sat on the bridge talking & enjoying it. Got home at 12. | |
