18 July 1878 — Therapia | |
Thursday. 18th [July 1878]. The sad news abt the Hansons was confirmed by a note I got before breakfast from Mrs Willy. The little child was alone in the garden watering his garden. He was missing at lunch time & when search was made his hat was found on the top of a well—search was made & his body found at the bottom. I bathed before breakfast. At 10 set out in the steam launch with Henry to go to Rumeli Hyssar to see the distribution of prizes at the Robert College—Mr Maynard presiding. At the end Henry was called upon to speak. He congratulated the students on their success & said there were now great careers open to the Christians in Turkey and a great future for the country. It depended on the Christians of every denomination by showing respect to each other & to the Mussulmans & by having brother love one with another as a bright example to the Mussulmans whether this Empire became a great one or no. There was then a speech by Mr Maynard & a prayer. We hastened home—arriving to lunch at 2 ock. Visit from Dr Dickson. Sat & worked & talked till it was time to dress & at 5 started in the “Antelope” to go to the Fleet. Took with us the Dolez & all our chancery. It was lovely eveng & we sat on the bridge going down. We arrived a little after 6.30 & sat down to dinner 13 of us. As soon as we had dined went on board the Alexandra in the Admirals barge. Had a little time to wait in Capt. Fitzroy’s cabin before the theatricals began. The piece played was Aladdin or the Wonderful scamp. The ship was charmingly lighted up & decorated. The piece lasted abt 1½ hour. Afterwards we had refreshments & then had to leave the dancing & return to the Antelope– The Alexandra & the Devastation both opened magnetic lights on the islands & ships. We had a fine moon also to return. We had singing chorus &c &c on the way & got home abt 12.30. | |
