24 July 1878 — Therapia | |
Wednesday. 24th [July 1878]. Did not bathe– At 11.30 I started in the Antelope & took the cook, Giovanni & Hill, Mme Joubert & Mama’s maid & Jerry. Stopped at Hyssar & took on board Pss Vijdane up. She came in her caique with a green velvet hanging thrown over the back of it, at the corners of wh were silver fish dangling into the water & the rowers had silver fish on their green velvet jackets. She brought a man servant & a slave girl. She herself of course wore the ferace & veil– We then stopped at Fundukli & sent the barge to fetch the other ladies but only Princess Nazli with Miss Meyrick and a slave came—the other ladies had excused themselves, then we went straight to Prinkipo & lunched en route Jerry & the maids serving us. Just as we finished lunch we arrived. The Adl sent his barge to fetch us & we went on board the “Alexandra.” He took us all over the ship & even into the engines & the Turkish ladies were delighted. We rested & took tea & coffee & cigarettes & then went off to the “Devastation” & were most kindly recd by Capt. Hunt Grubbe. The ladies climbed into the revolving tower & turned it themselves firing off the gun. A Turkish gentleman was on board & wanted to join the party to wh the Princesses objected & we got the Admiral to send him to see the “Temeraire.” They said they did [not] mind talking to European gentleman but cd not speak to Turks. When we went into Capt. Grubbe’s cabin the Pss’s were quite done & Capt. G. brought Eau de Cologne & cold water for them & they were delighted at the civility of our gentlemen. Being 4 oclock we had to set out to return home so we went on board the Antelope & set off. Abt ½ way we had “hot bearings” & had to stop abt ½ hour. We reached abt 6 & left the ladies at their respective homes & I reached home abt 7. Found Ct Zichy had come to dine with us. After dinner we went to an eveng party at the French Embassy—a dance which was very nice & their terrace was lighted up. The night was very hot. | |
