19 March 1879 — 24 Onslow Gardens
Wednesday. 19th [March 1879]. Stayed in bed & sent for Burton to prescribe for me. Kate came to spend the day with me. I got up for dinner. Henry dined with the Rates & I dined at Lady Salisbury’s—a large party. Just at dessert there was a great trembling of the table the candles & fruit dishes began to rock & at last a high metal thing holding many lighted candles fell with a crash into the face of Mme de Bilan the Dutch Minister’s wife. The Spanish Minister Rances who sat next her broke the fall & put out the candles. Lord Salisbury held on to the table to prevent more catastrophes & it was discovered that a leg of the table was badly screwed in & had given way. Happily no one was hurt & as it was nearly the end of dinner Lady S gave the signal for departure. There was a party in the eveng & I got home late.
