20 March 1879 — 24 Onslow Gardens
Thursday. 20th March [1879]. Got up latish & went down by train to Windsor with Lord Salisbury, the Chinese Ambassador, the French Ambr & the Peruvian Minister. Had a long talk with Ld Salisbury who was very pleasant. On arriving at Windsor we were met by the Castle carriages. Got there while the Household was at luncheon. Lady Erroll recd us & was very civil & gave us luncheon. We then waited in the Long Corridor & abt 3 the Queen sent for us. I went in first. H.M. was very gracious. She had Pss Beatrice with her. Asked how long we shd stay & when I said we shd be back in Conple by beginning of May said it was too bad having such a short holiday. She only kept me 2 minutes. Henry was with her some time. He tried to persuade her to go to Venice when H.M. is in Italy where she is going. He told her also that the Sultan had displeased him by giving me a diamond bracelet to wh she replied “Quite right of the Sultan—he ought to give her anything he pleases.” We returned to the station very soon after—having first been made to sign our names in the Queen’s birthday book. Lady Erroll took me to her room to arrange myself & to wait, but I cd not remain many minutes as we soon set off again. On our way from Paddington Station to Onslow Gardens we stopped at Lady Marion Alford’s & called on her. Luckily she was at home. We had a small dinner party at home Sir J. Walsham, Mr Burton of Brit: Museum & National Gallery.
