3 June 1879 — Brusa
Tuesday. 3rd June [1879]. Ahmed Vefyk P. came down to fetch us at 9.30 to carry us off with him. He took us to see his 2 new schools—one for girls—one for boys– It was very very hot. We went also again to see the beautiful tombs with their lovely tiles of blue dark & light & then by a most steep & horrible route he took us up to the Sultan’s kiosque. At the end the road became so bad that we had to get out & walk. It was a lovely place when once reached. There was a view all over the plain and one looked down upon the town with its countless minarets. We were however glad to rest. In the vestibule we found a fountain playing in the middle of the marble floor & round it were placed divans & cushions to rest on. We rested till abt 2 when breakfast was served– We had a smaller banquet than the last—but as the Pasha had promised only 5 different dishes he cheated me my having 3 or 4 variety of each– Some native musicians came in after dinner & deafened our ears with wild endless Turkish airs. Abt 4 we began to prepare to leave. We walked down to the carriages & en route met a Turkish refugee funeral. The men were carrying an open bier & the body was merely covered with a brown cloth. At the bottom of the hill we took leave of the Pasha—& changing carriages at Kara Mustafa baths we took leave of Mrs Sandison & set off for Mudania. It was very very hot & as we got the half way halt a storm began. We made tea in my travelling machine & had to drink it & hurry off & before we reached Mudania it began to rain. We got there abt 9 & were glad to get on board the Antelope & get to bed.
