7 September 1879 — Therapia
Sunday. 7th September [1879]. Went to church in the morng. Mrs Willie came in to ask if she shd come up to tennis tomorrow– Dr Millingen came & washed out my eyes with nitrate of silver wh made them smart very much for some time. May came & stayed lunch. Prof. von [illegible word] a German who had brought letters for Henry also came to lunch. Heard Jerry his catechism & at 3 we went out in the Grand Caique (10 oars) Henry & I, B & E, Alice, Mr Winsloe, the Admiral, Mr Oliphant & May. We went to the Symplegades the rocks just at the entrance of the Black sea—& landed & climbed up to the altar on the top where we made our tea & remained abt an hour. It took abt 1½ hour to row there & abt 1 hour to come back; we got home in time to dress for dinner. May went down to Candilli in a caique. Besides the Embassy we had the Dicksons, Mr Oliphant, Capt. [illegible word] & Capt. Fitzroy to dinner. Ct Corti came in in the evening. Blanche sang & we sang Hark ye neighbours in chorus. The Adl. & Mr Winsloe left us & went on board the Helicon to leave for the Fleet at daybreak.
