16 April 1880 — Constantinople | |
Friday. 16th [April 1880]. Mrs Jolliffe & I still feeling CD stayed in bed till lunch. Sat out & had tea in the garden & had visits from Blacque B., Hatzfeldt & Mme Mantilla. Mr Nicolson & Mr Bland & Mr Lascelles dined with us & directly after dinner we were alarmed with a cry of yarghan var & we saw flames which seemed to be quite near. We tried to get up on the roof to see but cd not do so– The sparks went up to the sky like fireworks. Arthur Burr went out to see abt it & came back to say it was a house near the Teke wh was on fire but that it was not spreading. Cts Corti & Collobiano came in & we played dominoes. | |
