30 April 1880 — Constantinople
Friday. 30th April [1880]. I was tired & remained in bed till 12.30 when Mme Mantilla arrived & she sat with me while I dressed & she trimmed me a black hat to wear. We lunched at 1 & Mme M. with us & then we drove her & Mrs Lascelles down to the arsenal where our big 10 oared caique was waiting & Capt. Swaine & Mr Stevens met us and we rowed up the Golden Horn to the Sweet Waters. It was a very hot day & being Friday every where there were rows of Turkish women sitting by the waters side clothed in every colour of the rainbow. The fish jumped in every direction looking like flying fish– As we got nearer the Sweet Waters there were larger batches of women & men & small boats & caiques & as the river had got very shallow & our boat was very long it was not easy to get along. At the Sweet Waters we landed & walked among the carriages to see the Turkish ladies driving. The heat & dust were excessive but we saw some very pretty women. We had to leave early as Henry had to return for a meeting of the Corps dip: at the Embassy. Mrs Lascelles dined with us & after dinner we took her to the German Embassy to the Rehearsal wh lasted till past 12 at night– We had a good many tussles with the German Director of the German Choir Herr Kunert & it was rather trying altogether. After we had done the whole rehearsal we found that the chandeliers stopped all the sounds & even had to move pianos &c further back & try it again & it was much more satisfactory. Went home tired.
