3 May 1880 — Constantinople
Monday. 3rd May [1880]. I remained quietly in bed till 11 & then got up– Lunched at 1 & directly after Mme Livadari, Henry & I drove to the German Emby. Altho’ the Concert was not announced till 2.30 we found a great many people had already arrived—& soon the room was crammed. We had a small room at the side but it was very full. As soon as the young Princes (the Sultan’s son & nephew) arrived abt 3 the Concert began with the Children’s choir then the Men—then the Children– We had next a song by Mme Livadari, a duet by Mme Dubsky, & Mr Lucas—piano & violincello & the first part ended with selections from our Cherubini’s Requiem– Mme Livadari, myself, Lanzoni & Swaine. The Princes then went away and refreshments were handed round in the Concert Room & ices & lemonade. Mme Mantilla took me round up a winding stair where we saw the Turkish ladies, Mme Mohsin Khan, Mme Hilmy & her niece & her sister & with them was Mrs Tyrell– Hill & Jerry were waiting upon them. They were hidden by a wooden jalousie wh we had had stretched across the music gallery that the Turkish ladies shd hear without being seen. The 2nd part of the Concert began by Mme Dubsky’s piano solo—then came the trio Verequin, Sartoris & Denant—Lanzoni solo followed a lovely piece by Lassen & then came our dreadful duets wh however we got through very well & I could then breathe easy. The whole finished with the Tannhauser Chorus “Heil, Heil” sung by German men, women & children accompanied by 2 pianos M. & Mme Dethier on the one, Mme Kuhlmann & M. Della Tolla on the other. It was very well done & greatly applauded & encored– Every one seemed satisfied with our efforts & we got home abt 6—glad to rest & dined alone. Henry, Arthur Burr & I played dominoes afterwards.
