6 May 1880 — Therapia
Thursday. 6th May [1880]. I spent the morning unpacking & putting things straight. In the middle of it all Henry sent for me & showed me a telegram we had recd from Lord Granville saying that the Govt proposed to send out Mr Goschen as special Ambr and that Henry might have leave & go to England– This was a great blow as I feel sure we shall never return here. Hill informed me that since last night Jerry had not been seen. Hill had told him that as Henry had decided that he was to be a stable boy he must go up to James– Mrs Jolliffe came to see me & we sat in the boudoir over the fire & had tea. In the eveng I heard that Jerry was in hiding at the Caiquiji’s house so I went there & called him & he came out meekly & I told him to follow me. He did so quietly for some time but near the stables his courage failed him & he began to cry & beg to withdraw. I told him it was no use—that James wd be kind to him & dragged him in; as soon as he saw James he was quiet & resigned to his fate. Mr Ashburnham who is staying at the hotel & is taking his leave here, dined with us & we played dominoes.
