7 June 1880 — En route to Venice
Monday. 7th June [1880]. We got to Malamocco at daylight & I woke when we stopped to looking out of my port hole saw the rising sun & being ½ asleep almost took it for sun set. We got up to Venice abt 4.30 & soon after Mr Malcolm came on board & the Admiral Acton sent an officer to enquire after us. Henry had to get up. I did not get up till 6. Mr Malcolm came to offer us to stay with him & to tell us that our gondolier Antonio & his wife had been found to have robbed us of linen, carpets & kitchen copper & pawned it all. The wife was in prison. Antonio had not yet been taken. My first thought was of the stupidity of a man who had been with us 6 years losing his place in such a manner. We shall get the things back as they have found the tickets & it will cost us abt £50 so he must have pawned things of 3 times the value. Malcolm took us to his house & there we found our letters. Abt 10 we had breakfast– We went out later to our house wh we found in the hands of the police—2 small Italians in uniform—& a stout detective—& the inspector of police of the quarter. We find it difficult to remember what is lost but we fancy many things have gone embroideries blankets & the like. We then went up to the upper floor to arrange about having them put in order for our use– We returned to Mr Malcolm’s & Mme Marcello called– Mr Ashburnham also came & told us Mr Nicolson had gone off to Vienna. Henry & he went to our glass shop. I laid down & rested till dinner. Mrs Brown & Sir B. Walker dined with us & we went & walked on the Piazza Mr Brown going with us. The band was playing. We came home at 10.
