15 June 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Tuesday. 15th June [1880]. Sat with the M in the morng. Mr Bartlett called & we gave him the order of the Medjidie wh I had brought him fm Consple. Later Ivory came to call & I saw him for the first time since he became Lord Wimborne. He was very well. Cornelia follows him tomorrow from Scotland. I got a very polite & affectionate note from Mrs Gladstone asking us to go to tea with her that eveng. At 3.30 Blanche fetched me & took me out driving with her in her brougham. We shopped & then went to Connies but she was out & we got the children to give us tea. We went on to Arthur’s & saw Mildred & her governess for a few minutes & then as it was pouring we went home. We dined at the Thomson Hankeys. Mr Adams 1st Comr of Works took me to dinner & on my left sat a Col. Alexander. I told Mr Adams a good many things about Embassy furniture at Consple. Met at dinner Lady & Miss Thornton, Sir C. Murray, Sir Arthur & Lady Gordon, Ld & Ly Ar Russell &c &.c We went on to Downing St & were most cordially recd by Mrs Gladstone & G. & Henry entered into confabs. Mrs G. sat me on a sofa by her side & they did all they cd to wipe from our minds all Gladstones former abuse of Henry. We met there the D’Antas whom we had not seen since Madrid days & Sir Wm & Lady Gregory. We did not stay long but went on to the Somers & found it was late & there were not many people there. Saw Addie Tavistock who was pretty & nice as ever.
