19 June 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Saturday. 19th June [1880]. I had rather a headache & so I laid on sofa in boudoir all the morng. Arthur came to see me & we had a long talk over all his affairs & he stayed on to lunch to wh Monty also came. After lunch I went out in Mamas carriage & took Nelly & Alice. I called on Mrs Frith & found her at home. Met there Carrie Somes & Mrs Blackwell. Went to fetch little Mildred Guest & took her & the girls to Mrs Rates where there was a child’s party. Maria came there with some of the younger children & we left them all with Mrs Rate & Maria & I went to Langham House & had tea while I rested. Henry came in & we had a chat. We dined with Sir Coutts & Lady Lindsay—met Mr & Mrs Cyril Flower & Mr Knowles the Editor of the 19th Century—a nasty conceited little man– There was a gentleman & lady & a single man besides whose names I did not catch. Lady Lindsay was wonderfully dressed in gold brown satin with great yellow flowers—with all kinds of mental ornaments hung on her head & neck & bracelets to fasten up her short sleeves– She has a peculiar way of twitching her head round over her shoulder wh is very uncomfortable. One thinks at first that she is constantly looking round at something behind her. She is handsome tho’ rather growing fat over dressed– Mrs Cyril Flower (née Rothschild) was fat & nice—her husband a decided snob in appearance– We left early & went to Lady Tenterdens where there were very few people—& some people sang dreadfully out of tune from time to time. Met there Ct Munster—Rances—& was introduced to Sir Garnet Wolseley—a nice looking pleasant little man– Glad to get to bed as I had a headache–
