23 June 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Wednesday. 23rd June [1880]. Addie Tavistock called for me in the afternoon & took me for a drive. We went to buy a bonnet for me & called on Mrs Gladstone & then at the Admiralty to Lady E. Baring but both were out. Came home early & tried to dress early for dinner but the hairdresser kept me waiting & then rushed in in a tearing haste popped up my hair & then flew on– We dined with Lady Somers & met Ld & Lady Airlie. I sat by Ld A. & Mr Rd Spencer took me to dinner & sat on my left. There were also there, Lord Granville, Ld & Ly Brownlow, Miss Baring (Ly Ashburton’s daughter), Lord Hinchinbrook &c After dinner Henry dressed in his uniform up in Ld Somers’ room & then we went on to the Court Ball. Met all my family there. It was hot & crowded & at abt 12.30 we came home.
