7 July 1880 — Langham House, Portland Place
Wednesday. 7th [July 1880]. Did not go out in morng. Riaños called & sat with me a good time. Kate & Cecil called also Blanche & May Ponsonby. At 3 Henry & I went out driving. Called on Lady Eastlake & found her in & sat with her some time. Called on Elisa White & found her at home & then we went on to Little Holland House to see Watts. We found on the site of the old house a quantity of fine villas in one of wh Watts lives & to wh he has given the name of L. Holland House. He received us in a curious costume & said he was modelling & took us into a shed where he was modelling a huge equestrian statue of Le Gros Veneur throwing off his hawk. He then took us to the studio & showed us a lovely little picture of Love flying out of the window while Poverty entered into the door & many others things in different stages. I went from Watts’ to call on Lady Sherborne & met a lot of people at tea there—Ld. Houghton, Sir Hy Bulwer, Lady Airlie &c. They were all talking of Lady Marian Alford’s dangerous illness. Went home. Blanche came & sat with me. We dined at Mr & Mrs Childers’, a very dull dinner—a good old man Genl. Whitbread took me down. My other neighbour was unknown to me– We went afterwards to Hamilton Hse where there was a small party. Pss Mary dining there & Swedish Glee singers singing—small & dull & smart.
