24 July 1880 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Saturday. 24th July [1880]. We left Aldermaston abt 4 & drove to Mortimer station & took the train to Basingstoke. We had to wait there an hour for the Salisbury train so we employed our time in eating luncheon. We got a very fair mutton chop in a clean & tidy room. We had to change again at Salisbury from the fast train into a slow one wh stops at Gillingham the station nearest to Motcombe House Shaftesbury. We found Lady Westminster had sent the omnibus to meet us. We had 3 miles to drive. We got to Motcombe soon after 6 had some tea & a little talk with Lady W. Theodora & Merthyr & then dressed. After dinner we went up to Merthyr’s sitting room & he showed us the animalcula under a strong microscope wh are to be found in the dirty water of a pond. We were much interested & amused till bed time.
