30 July 1880 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 30th July [1880]. Did not go out. Sat in the hall & then went & sat with Lady Somers in her room & cleaned up her diamonds for her till lunch. There was a thunderstorm & a tremendous downpour just before lunch & then it cleared but it interfered greatly with the cricket match wh was going on– After lunch we went out to the bowling green where a band was playing & a good many neighbours came. I sat with Miss [illegible word] & then walked up to the Tennis Court with her. She was most entertaining. We had tea up there & watched the game. It poured at intervals. Connie & I walked down the village & called on Mrs White & met old Baker the woodsman—& then called on Mrs Meaby & I stayed some time till a shower was over– Sir H. M. Thompson took me in to dinner & instructed me abt dinner giving & who to know in London who gave good dinners! A band played during dinner & we danced in the eveng. Pss Frederika danced every thing. I danced once & was amused by one man’s saying to my refusal to dance “then shall we sit it out” wh seems the correct thing to do now a day. The Pss insisted on making Henry dance a quadrille with her– I went to bed early & left the dancing still going on.
