2 August 1880 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 2nd [August 1880]. We were to have gone over to Abinger at 11.30 but it came on to pour so we had to wait till it cleared at 12.30 & then we drove over to call on Mr & Mrs Farrer. They have built a charming house, with a hall wh I did not admire. It is all lined terra cotta– It has a gallery all round wh I suppose serves as passage to bed rooms—but it spoils the proportions. They were just going to luncheon & asked us to lunch with them wh they did. We met Mrs Farrers brother Wedgwood, Hy Smith of Oxford & a Mr Coffin. After lunch we walked thro’ the gardens to the “Rough” where are lovely views—& then down to the flower garden near the lodge gates & then we went home. We got our portmanteau, bid adieu to Alice & drove over to Fredley to stay with Mrs Drummond. Mrs Kay was better & down stairs. Henry walked out with Mrs D. & Miss Pressy & I sat & talked with Mrs Kay. The papers have alarming accounts of Gladstone who is seriously ill—being a Bank holiday we could get no news this afternoon.
