4 August 1880 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Wednesday. 4th [August 1880]. A warm day. Wrote letters. Played a game of lawn tennis before lunch with Arnold, Henry & Francie. After lunch we went an expedition to Leith Hill. I drove the wagonette & Mr Arnold sat by me—Francie behind– The carriage took Kinglake, Mrs Arnold, Margie & Henry. We drove first to Parkhurst & called on old Mr Scarlett & his wife & found them in– A rather dreary dull ugly place—with fine cedars. We drove on to the top of the hill where was a splendid view & tower—& an old woman to take care of it. She boiled a kettlefull of water for our tea & we had it there enjoying the combination of jam & scenery. We had to walk a little way down the steep hill & I got Kinglake to give me his arm under pretense of being helped but in reality to help him as he is rather lame & very blind. We drove home in the same order & got in after 8. Had a little music in the evening.
