5 August 1880 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Thursday. 5th August [1880]. At 11.30 we set out to drive to a wood called “the Lilies” on Ranmore Common. I drove Mr. M. Arnold in the wagonette & Ida sat behind. We took a good time getting there as the hill was so long, & we had to go at a foot’s pace. The day was lovely & quite hot. When we got into the wood we had to settle how the Miss Arnolds were to be got from the neighbouring village– Mr Arnold & I started off in the fly which had brought the rest of the party. We had a lovely drive & near Effingham we found the 2 Miss Arnolds sitting on a wall waiting for us. We took them up & then went on to give some orders about the Arnold carriage & then returned to the Lilies. We found a paper pinned on a tree with directions where we should find our party– They had chosen a lovely spot on the brow of a hill & had spread out the luncheon under the trees. As soon as we joined them we began to eat & had an excellent cold repast after wh we amused ourselves in boiling coffee in a réchaud. Then the Arnold family took leave of us having to return to their own homes, & the rest of us walked thro’ the wood picking flowers & singing catches. I returned with Alice, Henry & Kinglake in the fly. Mr & Mrs Scarlett & young Mrs Scarlett dined at Milton. We sang & played in the evening.
