6 August 1880 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Friday. 6th August [1880]. Change of weather & it became showery– After luncheon were walking with Mrs Rate in the garden when Lord & Lady Arthur Russell came to call & walked in the garden– Then came Lady Eastlake & Miss Elliot. We gave them tea & before they left Blanche & Edward & Onie arrived from London to stay a few days. We were glad to see them as we have to be off to Tunbridge Wells to see L. Stratford tomorrow morng. Mr Evelyn dined & Mr & Mrs Tom Hughes also & Archdeacon Atkinson. The conversation turned on murders &c we ladies protested. Late in the eveng we got a telegram from Lady Stratford saying we were not to come as Ld S. was not very well. We also got one saying Giovanni had arrived at Venice with our 190 cases.
