8 August 1880 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 8th [August 1880]. I walked to Dorking church with Edward in the morng. Blanche drove there with Alice. B & I left before the sermon & walked home with little Ida to show us the short cut. Packed up my bag to leave for London. Blanche & Edward went with us to Box Hill Station & we left by 4.40 train. We got to London past 6 we found there letter from Lady Somers asking us to dine with her tonight. We sent off at once to ask if she still expected us & receiving an answer that she did we dressed at once & went to 4 Chesterfield Gardens. They were quite alone & we dined a parte carré. Addie Tavistock came in the evening. We left early. The excitement abt Dr Tanner’s fast of 40 days is over as he completed it at noon yesterday & still lives.
