26 August 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 26th August [1880]. At about 11 o’clock Louisa the housemaid turned up from Constantinople having come by a Florio steamer. It was a very hot day. I wrote letters to Mrs A. Hanson & Mr Washington at Consple. I spent a long time in arranging the drawg room furniture & putting things straight. Had some tea at 3.30 & then went out in the gondola with Henry to Css Pisani’s house to see the decoration in her long room to decide whether we wd have our dining room done like it. We decided to have the colour but I found a better pattern on some old brocade. I came home & Henry went to see Guggenheim. After dinner we went in the Piazza to take a little walk but before 9 were driven home by a thunderstorm wh raged for a long time & had not come to an end before we went to bed. In the afternoon we had a visit from Minghetti & he sat & talked Eastern politics for a long time with Henry & was very agreeable. Henry lent him the Times & he promised to return with it tomorrow.
