28 August 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 28th [August 1880]. My 6th bath– Worked & read Life of Byron. Had a visit from Mr Malcolm. After 3.30 I went out in gondola with Henry, called on Mr Rawdon Brown he was in– We went afterwards to Old Zen the antiquarian. We had some difficulty in getting in. He lives in the Palazzo Tron a fine old building. Zen was an old shriveled man in a black cap & sat at a desk with bottles of samples on paints or something round him– The walls were covered with old canvasses having the history of Joseph– The sala was immensely long—I shd say abt 100 feet– When we admired the Palace he told us there had been an immense ball room besides wh had been pulled down. He said it was some time since he had given up the trade of antiquario but had still something left & he opened some rooms & showed us a few 2nd rate pictures &c so we left him & returned home. Malcolm dined with us & we went to the Piazza afterwards & had ices. Sr Mocenigo of St Stae joined us—the man who pretends to claim Cyprus & has a lawsuit with our Govt to get money. He is half witted but has a clever wife who puts him up to all this. She is a Greek—& has been handsome– She is now away in the country.
