3 September 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 3rd [September 1880]. My 11th bath. I went with Louisa the housemaid as Henry remained with Morelli. The weather appears quite fine & settled. Henry & M. went out together & then came back & fetched me & we went to the Manfrin Palace in the Canareggio to see if there were any pictures left worth buying. We found abt 5 pictures wh Henry said he wd bargain for later. The custode said he wd show us another fine picture he knew of for sale—& he took us to a most picturesque house near San Cancian where there was a lady with 3 pretty daughters & there was a Madonna & Child in a grand frame wh Morelli thought very little of & so we came home & had some tea. Henry went to call on Brown. I had a visit from Sir Algernon Bosthwick who has just arrived he stayed with me chatting until Henry’s return & tho’ he is airified & a fearful snob his smart talk was rather amusing. After dinner we went with Morelli to the Piazza—the band was playing & there was a dreadful crowd—just as we were going home we observed the new lights in the Palace & then there began a ridiculous piece of music wh we found was called the Battle of S. Martino—the music was distributed in different places & then squibs were fired from the windows on opposite sides of the Square—to represent the attack—at the end of all Bengal lights were lighted all round the Piazza & the crowd applauded– Morelli was furious at the insults offered to the population by such a silly performance.
