6 September 1880 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 6th September [1880]. We left Venice by 10.15 train– We changed at Conegliano & got to Vittorio abt 1.10. There we found Mr Malcolm’s carriage waiting for us. Our luggage was strapped on behind, Hill hoisted by the driver on the box & Henry & I inside. We eat our luncheon as we went along and at Sta Croce we stopped & got a cup of coffee. It was a very hot day but every thing looked lovely. When we got within sight of Belluno we turned off to the right to Longarone where Mr Malcolm’s house is. We found the house was down in the valley by the side of the Piave torrent. It is a large & comfortable house & not far are his great saw mills. We saw the rafts shooting by to a kind of harbor where they remain the night. We dined at 6.30 & then sat out in the garden till 9.30. Bed.
