7 September 1880 — La Punta, Longarone
Tuesday. 7th [September 1880]. We got up early & went out to see the rafts start for Belluno wh they did at 8.30 when a man opened the sluices & they shot out of the harbour at a great rate. The last was a small illmade one with inexperienced rafters & as soon as it got out of the sluices there it stuck– We went down to see the saw mills wh are worked by the torrent & wh belong as do 16 other establishments in the valley to Mr Malcolm. We breakfasted at 11.30 & afterwards started with Mr Malcolm for a drive to Belluno wh took us abt 2 hours. It was a lovely day—tho hot—& scirocco in the plain of Belluno. We walked about in the town—went into the church & looked at the fine old town hall wh had suffered a good deal from the earthquake of 4 years since but has been restored. It has some very interesting busts on the facade—some very good. We went & sat in a café & had lemonade & rested till the carriage was ready & then started home. Dined at 6.30. Sat in the garden in eveng & the garden was illuminated by the people of Longarone & we had a visit from the sindaco of the place & all the officials. The amateur band consisting of abt 30 men played to us & performed very creditably. They had a band master whom they paid 30 fcs a month. Mr Malcolm had wine handed round & when the band struck up our national air they gave Evvivas for England, Henry & Malcolm & they played the Italian hymn & Henry gave cheers for Italy & the King &c. Abt 10 o’cl. they took leave of us & departed. Blue & red lights were burned at intervals & all the people of the villages round came to assist at the fête.
