8 September 1880 — La Punta, Longarone
Wednesday. 8th [September 1880]. We got up at 6.30. Breakfast at 7 & started for Zoldo. At Longarone we got out of Malcolm’s carriage into 2 little mountain carriages. M. going first & Henry & I following in our carriage. We had a most delightful drive up the valley of Zoldo– The weather was charmg & cool—& the ravines wonderful. We got into the heart of the Dolomites & it was a magnificent view—a regular amphitheatre of fine peaks. We stopped for a short time at Lower Zoldo & had caffé au lait & then drove on under the Pelmo to Upper Zoldo under the Civita. A few clouds got up & hung abt the high mountains– We got out at the house of a gentleman & took some coffee there & then went for a walk—& then started for Lower Zoldo where we found an excellent breakfast prepared & as it was 2.30 we were hungry notwithstanding our frequent coffees– At abt 4 we started home. The weather changed & it began to rain slightly. We had an excellent dish of fried bulb celery with an agro dolce sauce—& excellent soup at Zoldo. We returned in under 2 hours to Longarone & came down the pass at a great pace wh was alarming when one looked down & saw the fearful abyss one wd fall into if there was an accident. At Longarone Signor Tesa asked us into his house until Mr Malcolm’s carriage was ready & his wife served us ices & coffee– We got home at ¼ 7 & dined at 7.30. A thunderstorm came on. We agreed not to start for Schluderbach tomorrow morng unless it was fine.
