10 September 1880 — La Punta, Longarone
Friday. 10th September [1880]. The weather was improved & we started off at 8 after getting our letters for Schluderbach in Mr. Malcolm’s landau. There was still scirocco but it did not rain. We went a good pace & in 2 hours we got to Tai where we changed horses—M. having sent them on for us. We got to Cortina abt 12 just in time for the table d’hôte– There were a good many people– Near us was a stout lady & several children. When her letters were brought to her we saw on the address that her name was Rubiland & we remembered that we had met her at her mother’s Pss Clary some years ago at Venice. We spoke to her after the lunch & sat outside with her till it was time to start again. We went off abt 4 & the weather got worse as we got on & at Schluderbach it was pouring. We got a very good bed & the inn tho’ rough was comfortable & Herr & Frau Plona good kind of homely people. We dined apart but while we dined the table d’hôte was going on & we noticed a tall woman in black who kept turning round to stare at us. She was hard featured, bony & thin, (It rained hard all night long) & Henry said he thought she must be some German Countess in search of adventure. She had 3 toy terriers abt her.
